LINDA SOL: FROM CHICAGO'S WEST SIDE POETRY SCENE TO A VOICE OF HER OWN
CHI-RAP.com Artist Spotlight | October 18, 2026
Not every Chicago rapper comes through the drill scene. Some come through poetry, creativity, community and the determination to tell their own stories.
Meet Linda Sol, a Chicago West Side artist whose journey from spoken-word poetry to hip-hop proves that the city's musical identity is much bigger than one sound.
A WEST SIDE STORY
Raised in Chicago's Humboldt Park community, Linda Sol developed her voice through poetry long before she fully embraced the title of rapper.
As a teenager, she participated in Louder Than a Bomb, Chicago's celebrated youth poetry competition, and became involved with Young Chicago Authors, learning from artists and mentors including Jamila Woods and Kevin Coval.
That foundation helped shape her approach to songwriting. Instead of simply chasing a popular sound, Linda learned to build songs around emotion, storytelling and personal experience.
Her journey eventually took her to Stanford University, where she continued performing and developing her identity as an artist.
FROM POETRY TO THE MIC
Linda Sol's music refuses to stay in one lane.
Her influences reach from classic hip-hop and R&B to Latin music, reggaeton and the rich musical traditions of Chicago.
Her early EP 72, released in 2020, reflected the beginnings of that journey. The title referenced a bus route connected to her childhood, bringing a piece of Chicago into her music.
She also participated in Lollapalooza's 2020 virtual programming, introducing her work to a broader audience.
In 2022, she released Growing Pains, continuing to explore self-discovery, growing up and learning to trust her own voice.
MOTH: MATTERS OF THE HEART
Linda Sol's 2025 album MOTH (Matters of the Heart) marked another stage of her evolution.
The 10-track project explores relationships, self-respect, difficult emotions and the process of becoming a stronger version of yourself.
Rather than presenting personal growth as something easy, Linda uses the album to explore the uncomfortable parts of change.
The moth symbolizes transformation: moving through darkness, recognizing your own power and eventually emerging with a different understanding of yourself.
Songs such as "Shit Ain't Easy," "Shadows," "Sleeping Giant," "OTW" and "TOO FRESH" help carry that journey across the album.
It's a project that gives listeners a look at an artist developing her identity on her own terms.
CHICAGO ROOTS, A GLOBAL SOUND
Linda Sol represents an important part of Chicago hip-hop that doesn't always get enough attention: the connection between spoken word, independent music, Latin culture and creative self-expression.
Her music has continued to evolve. In July 2026, she released "PERREO PURO," adding another chapter to her genre-crossing catalog.
Her work reminds us that Chicago's next generation of artists doesn't have to sound alike to represent the city.
THE CHI-RAP VERDICT
Chicago has produced some of hip-hop's biggest stars, but the city's independent scene remains just as important to its musical future.
Linda Sol is part of that story.
From poetry competitions and neighborhood stages to full-length albums and new releases, she's building a catalog that reflects growth, creativity and individuality.
CHI-RAP.com salutes Linda Sol and the Chicago artists who continue to create music beyond expectations.
