CHI-RAP.com Feature: Psychodrama Returns — Chicago Underground Royalty Back on Stage

Long before Chicago rap became a worldwide force, Psychodrama helped create the blueprint for the city’s dark, lyrical, street-centered Midwest sound.

The legendary West Side Chicago trio consists of Buk (Yung Buk), Psyde FX and Newsense. The group began coming together in the early 1990s after Buk and Psyde met at Crane High School and later connected with Newsense through Chicago’s neighborhood music scene. What started as friends rapping together eventually developed into one of the most respected underground groups of Chicago’s 1990s hip-hop era. Staged Haze

Psychodrama developed a reputation for vivid storytelling, complex rhyme patterns and an unmistakably Chicago sound. Their catalog includes underground staples such as “Magic,” “Time Versus Life,” “Uh Huh (You Right),” “Unstable,” “Lethal Weapon,” “Revelations” and “Drama In My Life.” Their 1998 Greatest Hits collection also included appearances connected to names including Twista, Do or Die, Master P, Mystikal, Silkk the Shocker and Eightball. The group was significant enough during Chicago rap's mid-'90s explosion to attract major industry attention and eventually sign with Houston's influential Suave House Records. Fake Shore Drive

Buk in particular became familiar to a much larger audience through collaborations with Chicago artists including Twista. His appearance on Twista's classic “Adrenaline Rush” remains one of the most recognizable Psychodrama-related performances. YouTube
