WHAT THE STREETS ARE LISTENING TO IN 2026
Five artists to watch • Our predictions for 2027
Chicago created drill — but the city has never been limited to one sound. The hard drums, deep bass and unmistakable Chicago energy aren't going anywhere. The question for 2027 is whether more artists can bring that intensity to songs about ambition, relationships, survival, neighborhood pride and making it home.
Traditional street rap remains part of Chicago's musical landscape. At the same time, melodic rap, underground experimentation, poetry and independent releases are expanding the possibilities. Here's CHI-RAP.COM's editorial watchlist — not an official street-airplay chart or a claim that every featured song is drill or free of explicit lyrics.
FIVE ARTISTS & SOUNDS TO WATCH
1. POLO G — “STILL STANDING”
Survival, perseverance and honest emotion have long been part of Polo G's appeal. “Still Standing” is a fitting starting point for the conversation: hard-earned resilience can connect without making retaliation the entire message. The single arrived in October 2026.
2. MIKE DFG — HEI$MAN
Mike DFG's 2026 project HEI$MAN represents another side of Chicago: independent releases, collaborative energy and artists building their own lanes. His music doesn't need to be classified as traditional drill to matter to drill's next chapter.

3. THIRTEENDEGREES — THE UNDERGROUND WILDCARD
Not every future Chicago trend will come from traditional drill. Thirteendegrees is one example of the experimental lane, where alternative sounds, image and individuality can build a following outside familiar categories.

4. LINDA SOL — MOTH
Linda Sol brings poetry, emotional honesty and a wider musical palette to Chicago hip-hop. Her 2025 project MOTH belongs in the discussion about where the city's sound might go next. More space for women, introspection and experimentation is good for the culture.

5. V.I THE BOSS FEAT. FEATHER — “HOLD ME CLOSE”
Melodic collaborations offer a different way to combine a gritty rap delivery with vulnerability and connection. “Hold Me Close” is a track to explore as part of that broader conversation.

CHI-RAP.COM PREDICTS THE SOUND OF 2027
1. Melodic drill with real storytelling
The heavy production stays. More songs may focus on family, love, work, surviving setbacks and getting ahead.
2. More women and experimental artists break through
Chicago's next wave could blend rap, R&B, funk, poetry and unconventional production without asking permission to fit a label.
3. Independent video becomes the new radio
YouTube videos, short-form clips and direct fan relationships may increasingly shape how new Chicago artists get discovered.
4. More collaborations, fewer manufactured rivalries
Artists working across neighborhoods and genres could create a stronger movement than controversy-driven promotion.
2027 BELONGS TO ARTISTS WITH SOMETHING TO SAY
Chicago created drill. Now Chicago has an opportunity to show the world what comes next.
We're not asking rappers to soften their sound or pretend the streets don't exist. We're asking a bigger question: Can the same energy that made drill a worldwide movement help tell stories about building something, making it home, loving somebody and getting ahead?
We believe it can. The next wave might sound just as hard coming through the speakers, but the lyrics could tell a different story. Chicago has enough talent to make music for the clubs, cars, cookouts, headphones and the whole world.
